We know that the weekend of October 6th is a busy weekend here in Chicago and because of that we were having issues for anyone that wanted to stay longer then just the weekend at the Westin. Because of this we booked a second block of rooms at The Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel located at 163 East Walton Place. So now if you want to get a hotel room for longer then the weekend, we recommend first going with The Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel and then use the the Westin as a backup. Both hotels are close by to each other and are near or on Michigan Avenue, the “Magnificent mile” so if you are interested in seeing a lot of downtown Chicago, this is a great central location for you to stay. We will have a shuttle service leaving from these hotels to get guests to and from the wedding at Salvage One.

And what’s more serious then having a beer brewed for the day by us and with one of our favorite brewers in Chicago. The other day Maeve and I met with Pete Crowley owner and head brewer of Haymarket Pub & Brewery to talk about brewing a beer for our special day. We’re still working out some recipe ideas but it will likely be a hopped up irish red ale. We are honored that Pete has agreed to do this with us and we can’t wait to taste the finished product.

Over the weekend Maeve and I met with Jay St. Germain to talk about having the 4 Star Brass Band perform at our wedding. Jay is a member of several bands in Chicago that perform frequently around the city. And he happens to be in a few of our favorite Chicago bands to see live (Mucca Pazza, Get Up With The Get Downs). We knew he could help us with the celebratory vibe we’re going for at our wedding. Knowing that we wanted some fun live music at the wedding but also not wanting a wedding band to play all night long; the 4 Star Brass Band seemed like a perfect fit. The 4 Star Brass Band’s sound has been categorized as heavy funk. The band features a rotating cast of 6 musicians who all share a love for New Orleans music. If you have ever seen them perform at events in Chicago you know how much fun they are and for anyone who hasn’t seen them, you’re in for a real treat come October 6th.

Maeve and I have a block of rooms set aside for October 5th – October 6th at the Westin for anyone that will be coming to Chicago for the wedding. You can use the link to reserve your room or feel free to call the Westin at 312-943-7200. The Westin is a couple miles away from the Salvage One so we will have a trolley set up to take you to and from the wedding/reception.

At first, Maeve and I were unsure about finding someone to officiate our wedding. We weren’t sure about the ceremony at all except that we wanted something that was personal to us as well as something that wasn’t overly religious. After chatting about it for a while we remembered that our good friend Steve Siwinski has officiated a number of weddings and seemed like a perfect choice. Steve has known Maeve and I since we first started dating and has remained a friend for many years. We are both very excited Steve agreed to do us this honor. Thanks Steve!

Maeve and I have crossed another item off the incredibly long to-do list. We now have a caterer for the special day. The two of us met with a half dozen caterers in the area and then finally decided on two that we wanted to have a tasting with. Both of the tastings were great but the caterer that really won us over was Food For Thought. Although they were a bit of a larger organization them some of the other caterers we met with, they seemed to be much more accommodating to what we wanted and also brought some great ideas to the table, which is something I felt was really important. Maeve and I had never planned a wedding before so we were very open to many ideas that the seasoned professionals had.

From what we tried at the tasting, you can count on the food being great. I posted a few photos on my posterous page but that’s just a small sample of what you’re going to see at the wedding. For all our vegetarian friends, we didn’t forget about you. It’s not all pork belly and blood sausage… the tofu and mushroom tacos are fantastic and you’ll likely see me enjoying more of those during dinner.

With the caterer out of the way that is one of the last critical decisions we have to deal with. We can’t wait to share this very special day with you, so stay tuned for more information.

Maeve and I decided on a florist this week for our wedding. This was an area of the wedding that we are the least knowledgable in. Neither Maeve or I know much about flowers. So we needed to make sure we went with someone who understood our style and wasn’t out of our price range. As well as someone who was going to bring us some ideas for what would work with the space at Salvage One. The two of us met with a florist at Asrai Garden a couple weeks ago and had a great experience. Maeve had talked to a few other florists via email but Asrai Garden was the only one we met with in person. This meeting and the outstanding yelp reviews sold us on using them for our flowers. It was also great that they were local in our neighborhood. We love supporting local businesses when we can. Although they are a little more expensive then we would have liked, we know they are going to do a great job.

What to do with a wedding dress is often a polarizing topic.
